What Are Sustainability Frameworks?

Understanding and adopting sustainability frameworks is a key part of our journey towards a sustainable future.

Sustainability frameworks give you a structure. They’re essentially a roadmap for integrating sustainable practices into your business - and, crucially, the metrics you need to measure whether it’s actually working.

Why frameworks matter.

Without a framework, sustainability efforts can feel scattered. Frameworks provide the structure to drive improvements across environmental, social, and governance challenges, and they create a shared language for measuring progress.

The question isn’t whether to use a framework - it’s which one. You might adopt one established framework, combine several, or create something bespoke. If you don’t have sustainability practitioners in-house, bringing in a partner to help with evaluation and selection is a smart move. That’s something Human Kind can help with.

Here are three widely recognised frameworks to give you a sense of what’s out there.

The SDGs: A global blueprint.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are probably the most recognised framework globally. Seventeen goals covering everything from ending poverty to protecting the planet and promoting peace and prosperity by 2030. They’re interconnected and tackle the most urgent environmental, political, and economic challenges we face. Aligning with the SDGs helps your business connect to global priorities and drive meaningful change.

GRI: Pioneering sustainability reporting.

The Global Reporting Initiative has been setting the standard since 1997. It’s an independent organisation that helps businesses understand and communicate their impact. GRI standards offer a detailed framework for sustainability reporting - setting goals, measuring performance, and managing change. It’s one of the most widely used reporting standards in the world.

CDP: Driving environmental transparency.

The Carbon Disclosure Project focuses specifically on environmental transparency, pushing companies and cities to measure and manage their environmental impacts. Their data-driven approach highlights both the risks of inaction and the opportunities in getting ahead. CDP encourages proactive strategies on climate change, water resources, and forest protection.

Putting a framework to work.

Implementing a framework starts with understanding which goals and metrics are most relevant to your business. The right framework won’t just guide responsible practices - it’ll open doors to innovation and market leadership, and demonstrate that your business is serious about building a sustainable future.

While we’ve covered three frameworks here, there are many more. Choosing the right approach takes careful thought. The Sustainability Decoded GPT is a good place to start exploring, and when you’re ready for human input, Human Kind can take it further.
